Teddy Bridgewater didn’t do his Heisman Trophy campaign any favors with his performance against the unranked Kentucky Wildcats in Week 3.
Sure, the Louisville Cardinals ended up distancing themselves and winning the game, but Bridgewater struggled more than expected for a quarterback at the forefront of Heisman discussions.
The Wildcats were hanging with his team well into the second quarter and they stayed in range to at least make it close in the fourth quarter. Credit that to Bridgewater’s uncharacteristically slow start and pedestrian overall peformance. College Football Talk pointed out his early struggles:
Louisville with no first downs on first three possessions vs. Kentucky. Bridgewater 1-4 for 10 yards.

From there, Bridgewater showed some good things in the passing game, accumulating 250 total yards passing and rushing for 35 more. But the team’s run game is what allowed the Cardinals to avoid the upset—not Bridgewater’s arm.
With a schedule that’s perceived as weak in comparison to some other Heisman Contenders, Bridgewater has to make a splash against teams he’s supposed to shine against. He didn’t play poorly for much of the game, just not at the level he needs to in order to remain a top contender for the trophy.
There is still plenty of football left to play, though, so he has time to continue to play at extremely high level he’s capable of.
